Jane's Story

Jane talks about how she is leading her good life. She doesn’t choose to focus on the difficult times she has been through in the past and instead focusses on the positives. If you listen carefully to the areas of life Jane places great value on, it is possible to hear echoes of what has not worked for her previously.

Jane’s story is of a life of structure, meaning and of purpose. Of belonging and having greater choice and control over the things that are important to her and the ability to prioritise things that make life worth living.  Of being safe and having the opportunity to do things that bring her joy and connection. They are the simple ordinary aspects of life that many disabled people are denied. Without them as Jane so eloquently states, we experience heartache.

Jane describes the everyday things that make her house, her home. The importance of doing her housework. Her exercise routine at the gym that supports her health and wellbeing. Also, the pleasure she gets looking after her cat Poppy. All very gloriously ordinary.

People who receive support can find it hard to move on from the difficult times in their life. Reputations follow people.

Imagine if we were all judged on our worst day, and this was used to inform all aspects of our lives.

Jane is clear she finds the past upsetting. She wants to live her good life now and look forward to a bright future.

Heartache

Being admitted to hospital under section may be necessary at times. What is sometimes missed is the impact this has on the person. Jane describes missing her family, wanting to leave and feeling real heartache at the situation she found herself in.

Small supports organisations recognise the trauma associated with being detained in hospital. Part of the work of a skilled team is to help heal that heartache by supporting each person to create a new hopeful future.

With the right support Jane has taken control of her life and is rightly proud of her successes. Gaining certificates for weight loss. She has a structured and varied exercise routine and using lots of local community resources.

Successes

Jane’s team support her in the way that makes sense for her. Enabling her to be out and about in her local community, doing the things she loves in a way that feels safe and manageable.

Feeling Safe

Jane has been supported to develop her skills and follow her passions. She likes food and has developed expertise in preparing delicious home cooked healthy food.

Passions

Every person deserves the opportunity to find their lovely place. Just like Jane.
